This Hippie Trail section begins in the fascinating city of Mumbai, also known as ‘Bollywood for its position as the heart of the Indian film industry.

Riders can also take the opportunity to explore nearby Elephanta Island, home to a number of temples dedicated to the Hindu God, Shiva. The cyclists will board a ferry at the foot of the famous Gateway to India and head across the harbour to begin their week-long trip along the Konkan Coast. This coastal stretch is a hidden treasure and India’s best kept cycling secret (but not for long!): pristine, empty, white sand beaches, stunning seaside views, quaint ferry crossings, rolling hills, friendly villages, coconut groves, banana palms and the relaxing shade of endless mango trees.

The route is broken up by a rest day in sleepy Ganapatiphule, a popular destination for locals looking to relax. Here riders can enjoy the ocean breezes, take a sunset walk along the town’s endless golden sandy beach or enjoy a visit to the local Ganesh temple, the Ganapatipule Mandir. This sacred building contains a 400 year old idol that is said to have sprung up from the earth and pilgrims walk around the temple as a mark of respect. Three more days of cycling take the riders to Panjim, the capital of Goa, marking the end of this exciting section. Cyclists can celebrate the completion of their 2-wheeled journey by exploring the evocative ruins of Old Goa or heading to any one of the area’s stunning beaches.
