Group guided tour

Your sunset cycling adventure starts at the Takaro Trails base in the historic port village of Ahuriri, Napier.  You will be set up on your comfortable, hybrid style bike and be given a safety briefing by your guide before cycling the short distance to the National Tobacco Building, one of New Zealand’s most photographed buildings with its distinctive Art Deco style.  This building is now home to the Tony Bish Urban Winery and we make a visit to sample his excellent Chardonnay and learn about his unique ‘Golden Egg’ wine making process.

Joining the cycle trail we make our way past fishing boats and old port warehouses to the Ahuriri Estuary.  The trail then meanders for approx.. 10kms through this low-lying wetlands area, home to many species of wading birds and other wildlife.  As we make our way it is sobering to reflect that prior to the 1931 earthquake this area was all a vast tidal inlet before the land lifted 1.8m in the mighty shake.  Leaving the estuary behind we continue a further 5kms through sheep farming country before looping back around to complete our circuit back to Ahuriri.

Our tour ends with a well-deserved drink on the deck of a waterside bar where we can enjoy views of the sun setting over the water before returning to Takaro Trails.
