It is Germany’s largest and second most populous city and the eighth most populous urban area in the European Union. The city enjoys a temperate seasonal climate with round one third of its territory comprising forests, parks, gardens, rivers and lakes.
The city was subject to 363 air raids during WWII from 1940 to 1945 with so much damage that much of it has had to be rebuilt, often with the benefit of extraordinary architecture and urban design.
