Not far from Lisbon is a fascinating region which is home to the loveable Alentejo people and their rich history. Known for their typical Mediterranean gastronomy, and the wonderful crafts and products they produce from locally sourced cork, marble, olive oil and of course their grapes, a visit to this area in southern Portugal will appeal to those looking for a balanced mix of great cycling, excellent food and engaging history. On this guided cycle, which largely follows safe backroads, you will be welcomed with a dinner and drink on the first night and treated to some gourmet picnics during the tour.

The cycling route will take in the great ancient city of Évora, a World Heritage Site, many small fortified hamlets where you can learn more of the stories of the wars between the Moors and Spain, Neolithic constructions as well as a visit to the Alqueva Dam Reservoir, the largest artificial lake in Europe on the border with Spain. Your senses will be further enthralled with tastings of the local wines and liqueurs and a visit to a cheese farm. Although this trip is already packed with many highlights, a further dimension will be visits to many castles, one of which you will spend a night in.
