TDA Global Cycling
A rest day here will allow the cyclists to enjoy the town’s beautiful location, perched at the foot of the mountains on the shores of Erhai Lake.
The route, climbing ever so steadily, now heads north through the tiny village of Shaxi, once a major stop on the ancient Tea Horse Road running from Yunnan province to Lhasa and on to India, and on to Lijiang, whose old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Riders can spend their rest day here wandering the cobbled streets and cramped alleys of the city’s fabled Old Town. They should be sure to try the cuisine of the local Naxi population, a matriarchal society originally from Tibet.
The next few days of cycling will take the riders through the legendary Tiger Leaping Gorge, at 16 km long and 3900 m deep one of the deepest in the world. The route continues through stunning scenery, stopping for the night in the village of Bai Shui Tai, with its famous limestone terraces. The last day’s ride is something special, climbing up over 2400 m out of the valley and into Tibetan atmosphere of Shangri-La, marking the end of this spectacular section.
