Eastern Anatolia is the crossroads of the Armenian, Kurdish, Caucasian, Russian, and Turkish cultures.
There, nature and civilizations have shifted through time, with palaces, castles, mosques, and churches dotting the rugged countryside. The riders will head out of Erzurum and pedal onwards through the rolling hills of the Anatolian Plateau to one of the most relaxed towns on the entire route, the ancient city of Amasya. Set on a secluded section of the Yesilirmak River, the city boasts stunning Ottoman period houses and grandiose Pontic era tombs carved into Mountain walls. The riders are sure to enjoy a day off in this fascinating town.
Leaving Amasya, this Silk Route section takes the cyclists along secondary roads in rural Türkiye, stopping in beautiful Safranbolu for a rest day. This picturesque town, once an important stop on the Silk Road, will offer the riders a chance to try out the Tarihi Cinci Hamam, a restored 17th-century bathhouse that is still in operation. Pedalling to the shores of the Black Sea, the minarets of Saint Sophia and the Blue Mosque in Istanbul will draw near and the riders will feel a sense of accomplishment and amazement at reaching this stunning city, a crossroads between Europe and Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and a center of empires since Roman times.
