Our Michigan bike tour travels through Michigan's rural farmlands, its peaceful woods and forests, and into its welcoming lakeside villages and cities. We begin biking in Grand Rapids, a mecca of bike trails, and ride north out to the small town of Sand Lake. with a stop for lunch in the charming riverside town of Rockford. Next we head west to the shores of Lake Michigan and then up the coast to Michigan's surprising huge sand dunes. A morning van ride brings us to Sutton's Bay for lunch in this bayside town and an afternoon ride into Traverse City on the south end of the Grand Traverse Bay. Then it's eastward to meet the coast of Lake Huron and a stay in Mackinaw City. From Mackinaw City we take the ferry to Mackinac Island and spend the day exploring this island where feet and horses and bikes are the only modes of transportation. No CARS. On the last day we head back southward along the Lake Michigan shoreline on a rail trail. This trail actually started in the late 1800's as a pathway for bicycling and walking. It eventually was developed for train travel and thankfully now has returned to a bikeway.

Along the way in Petosky, we'll take a short side trail through a steep ravine beside the Bear River rapids. The rapids are a popular Michigan whitewater paddlesport location. Except for our first and last biking days when we are returning to our airport vicinity hotel, we'll be biking in to each night's lodging. If we van to a trail in the morning, we will load bikes for such trail connections. And most days find us lakeside at the end of the day. On our eight days of biking we'll travel on pavement, crushed limestone, asphalt, boardwalks, through tunnels and across wooden trestles. And every day there will be water - rivers, streams, ponds, bays and lakes. Lots and lots of lakes - some Great and some smaller. The glacier that covered this area 10,000 years ago left Michigan with over 11,000 lakes that are 5 acres or more in size and thousands more that are smaller. No wonder you seem to encounter them at every turn in the trail. This landscape and lakescape are the perfect backdrop for eight days of biking in late June
