Transferring from Nairobi into the Chyulu Hills and taking a short ride to our first camp provides a magical mountain biking introduction to East Africa. From an elevation of around 1800 metres, we can look across to Kilimanjaro, the 'Roof of Africa', before setting off to circle the mountain in an anticlockwise direction. Dropping 1000 metres to the Masai Plains, we follow red-dirt roads, fringed with termite mounds, to the market village of Loitokitok. All the while looking out for the savannah animals which in these parts mingle with the Masai cattle herds. We then cross into Tanzania, with views of Mount Meru and skirt the south side of Kilimanjaro on trails that lead through rainforest and banana plantations and by way of several villages of the Chagga people. Two final days of riding take us to the camp beside Lake Challa and then northwards into Kenya again, our circuit completed. An African bike trip for the adventurous!
