Enduro into the Heart and Soul of the Himalayan Wilderness
The new road development has brought us access into one of the most remote wilderness in the Nepal Himalayas, giving us unlimited access to some of the very best hidden trails on this desert like tundra of jagged cliffs, rolling plains, moraines and river valleys. Our team at Himalayan Single Track is super excited to bring this special first time in Nepal itinerary to you…”Upper Mustang — Kingdom of Enduro”. Right from the far reaches of the barren Chinese border all the way down to the rich and fertile Deepest Gorge in the World. Along trails which have for centuries only been trodden by Yaks and Nomads. Not only will some of these trails blow your mind and have you shouting “Yahoo” at the top of your lungs, they will also take you into the heart and soul of the nomadic and little explored lifestyle and culture of the Mustangi people.
This, by no means is not a luxury (read lazy) Enduro trip. The tour is pure, old school Enduro in every sense. Meaning, while you will have some of the sections shuttled, there is still plenty of grunt and grind uphill and some even tougher sections of push and carry. These sections are there because the downhill is epic and worth your sweat, curse words and effort. We stay overnight in authentic Tea houses and enjoy local food, music, culture and people.
This ride is a MUST on the bucket list of every hardcore Enduro purest, as it surely is a lifetime experience. The beauty of this trip is the trail options, while what’s written below is our standard program, if you’re the adventurous type, then let our guides take your exploring on many of the other options. Who knows you could find your own un-ridden trails.

Mountain Biking in the Himalayan Wilderness
To Mountain Bike Annapurna is on the bucket-list of many avid cyclists. This challenging high pass route through the Himalaya’s certainly has its appeal to mountain bikers.
Our guides keep telling us to take out the first day of this brutal climb up to Manang, but we keep saying to them, no matter where you start to Mountain Bike Annapurna, the first day is tough! Not to put you off, but this circuit is exactly that. It’s essentially five days of climbing to the heights of Throng La (5416m). Sometimes the way up is rough and rocky, sometimes covered in Ice and Snow, it is nothing short of Brutal! That’s why it’s also the route chosen by Yak Attack, the toughest bike race in the world.
BUT as the saying goes, what goes up must come down and indeed coming down is what we do best! Our route does not go straight down to Jomsom like many others do. We take you on some epic single tracks down through the famed Lubra Valley and beyond. After all, you did just spend five days climbing and humping your bike over a frozen mountain pass, so at the very least we want you to enjoy the downhill.
By far and away, to mountain bike Annapurna is one of our most popular trips offered by Himalayan Single Track. Of course it has a lot more to offer other than the psychical challenges and the trails. It’s a journey along one river valley and down another between some of the biggest mountains in the world! The scenery is stunning and along the way you will pass through many authentic villages, experience the warm hospitality of the Nepalese people and enjoy the delicious food and mind boggling views.

The Forbidden Kingdom
Well let’s be honest, if it was forbidden we would not be riding here! Mountain Bike Upper Mustang is fast becoming one of the most popular cycling destinations in Nepal. It’s not just about the challenging ascents and endless single track descents, it’s about the journey of discovery of the nomadic horse culture, breathtaking scenery and friendly heart-warming people that inhabit the region. If you love both culture and mountain biking, a particularly good time to go is in May to coincide with the Tiji Festival.
Venture into a land where Nomads herd yaks in the high pastures, ponies carry your luggage, rosy cheeked locals toil the arid soil to earn a living, where Tibetan culture is almost untouched by civilization and add to this some of the BEST and most Challenging mountain biking terrain in the world and you have an unforgettable journey.
For most of our guides, this is our favorite ride in Nepal, especially now we have added in new single tracks out in the remote regions of Yara, Luri Ghumpa and Tangye. Put simply this trip showcases the very best Mountain Biking that the Himalaya has to offer!
Who’s it for? Fit mountain bikers. Trails can be tailored according to skill level, but you should be able to climb and descend with confidence. It’s also a tour for lovers of culture and it might help if you don’t have a fear of flying in small planes.
Fitness Factor:- Good cardio fitness and hiking/biking pushing stamina required. Most of the trail is above 3000 meters altitude.
Skill Factor:- Confident on rocky descents, loose surfaces and some exposed single tracks
Comfort Zone:- Let’s say rustic, simple and homely Tea Houses, basic but good food, occasional hot water, no connectivity.

The Best Short MTB Trip in Nepal
By far and away the most ridden trail in Nepal, this short mountain biking adventure takes you into the heart of the Himalaya and rips down some of the best trails in the Lower Mustang region, including the famous Lubra Valley Trail. The route follows the raging Kaligandaki (Black River), famed as being part of the deepest gorge in the world, splitting the massive peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.
The upper part of the gorge is also called Thak Khola after the local Thakhali people who became prosperous from trans-Himalayan trade and are famed for their delicious food, apple growing and the making of local Apple Brandy.
Our trail climbs up to Muktinath at the foot of the mighty Throng Pass on route from the Annapurna Circuit. From here there are many options for some amazing single track and downhill riding, past ancient monasteries and traditional villages. Bump along on cobble paths and get your feet wet in ice fed streams. This is surely one of the most spectacular short mountain biking holidays in the world. If you ride with the HST Team we will take you on trails other companies don’t know to hidden lakes, villages and single track descents.
You have to try it once in your life.
Who’s it for? Intermediate fun loving mountain bikers, mountain biking families and people who might be doing their first multi day trip. Trails are also adaptable for serious bikers with a short amount of time in Nepal. Great for Expats looking for a short getaway.
Length:- 5 Days from Pokhara to Pokhara, or 11 Days Kathmandu to Kathmandu
Fitness Factor:- Weekend riders accepted on this one. Just one big climb of 1000 m, jeep assistance can be deployed if your heart begins to pop out of your chest.
Skill Factor:- Any confident cyclist can do this trail, there are many trail options, so we can tailor the ride to suit your skill level. Still you should have ridden a bike more than a few times to be able to enjoy it.
Comfort Zone:- You might get sweaty palms from gripping the armrests of your seat during the 20 min flight to Jomsom, but the rest of this journey is quite civilized. Well set up Tea Houses, hot water, WiFi in most places and great food, even a porter to carry your bags.

Kathmandu Intermediate MTB Day Trip
Kathmandu – Kakani – Bhudanilkhanta – 57km – Hard Ride, 5 to 6 hours
One of the most challenging rides in the valley that rewards you with fantastic mountain views on a clear day and around 9 km of single track riding in the dense jungle. The ride starts with a long on road climb of around 27 km to Kakani on a paved road. There can be some traffic like buses and tipper trucks on this road. (We can also provide shuttle for this section). The last 5 km of this climb are quite steep. Stop for rest and lunch in this tiny village and admire the Himalayan views. From here we enter the National Park and have a short but tough climb that may involve some push and carry. Things get exciting as we enter the jungle and the track narrows. Technical riding abounds for the next hour or so with both climbing and descending. Emerge from the jungle and drop almost vertically back down into the Kathmandu Valley. A truly great ride.

Pikey Peak and the Solukhumbu Region
Pikey Peak is a 4000 meter “hill” summit which commands stunning panoramic views of the Everest Range. We don’t call them mountains (Himal in Nepali) unless they have snow on them! The area is Solukhumbhu and it lies about 180 km North East of Kathmandu.
While the trails do not go into the Himalayan Region amidst the snow peaks, they rove around the mid hills and the range of hill just below the main Everest Region, rolling from 2300m to 4200m through ancient Rhododendron and Fur Forests, Spruce covered hill tops and cultivated farm land. In Spring, the area comes alive with Rhododendron, Orchids and Magnolia blooms. While the area is dominated with dense forest, small Sherpa and Rai Villages can be found as well as Monasteries and some cultivated land.
Riding in this area is best done in February through to May (Spring Season) and Late October through to Mid December (Autumn/Winter Season) In the Monsoon months the trails are too wet, slippery and overgrown. It is also hard for vehicle access. Also you might not get the Epic Views that you came for.
The Pikey Peak Trails are for those riders who love to hit the trail hard, while most people come to Nepal with the expectation of getting up close and personal in the high altitude regions of the Himalaya, we cannot deliver that on this trip, but we can deliver the best single tracks and riding on offer in Nepal. The trails are not mountain bike specific, this is certainly no bike park, which means they are natural and raw. Riders coming here should be fit and competent riders. Trails vary from steep, open rocky descents off grassy hill tops, down to rooty, slick jungle trails, stone stairs and some super fun fast flowing loamy sections. The combination of some tough pedaling up and carry sections, some shuttle support and enough views of the Snow Capped Himalaya makes this the one of the best bike trips in Nepal.
Add to that the chance to get up close and personal with the local culture and hospitality and ride on trails traveled by few tourists, well away from the heavily trodden trails of Annapurna and Mustang. Here you stay in simple teahouses owned and managed by local people, eat local food and enjoy the warmth of the kitchen fire and conversations of people who seem to come from an era long passed.
Who’s it for?
Fit, Skillful Mountain Bikers who don’t mind simple lodgings and really just want to bike awesome trails and are willing to be exposed to the simplicity of Sherpa Culture and life style.
Length
10 Days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu (Custom Itineraries also available)

This trail takes us from the heart of the tea estates up to the gateway to Kanchenjunga, down to the raging Tamur River and then up to the charming townships of Gupha Bazaar and Chainpur.
The ride is a mix of trails and jeep track with single track options for good riders. Full vehicle support means we can enjoy the down hills and not suffer through the ups. Highlights of the area are the super friendly local people totally unaccustomed to tourist, stunning views of the Eastern Himalaya and experience local traditions and delicacies like Tea, Thungba, Sukuti and Nepal’s National Flower the Rhododendron.
This is an epic ride that can be tailored to suit your needs. We can make a super challenging touring style ride with big climbs and big descent, or endruo style with full vehicle support for lovers of super technical single track. We can also shorten it to just a tea gardens ride.
