Homage to Catalonia

An alternative twist to the road cyclist's Mecca
Homage to Catalonia. Orwell's classic describes a region that is more than a physical entity, but also an idea and a way of life. With Catalan independence a live political issue in 2018, there has never been a better time to come and discover what makes this part of Spain unique. In doing so you will cycle around an area not just favoured by adventurers and dreamers but also professional cyclists, many of whom are based here due to the ideal climate and perfect roads. You'll no doubt leave this trip hailing Visca Cataluña!
We'll be starting off in Girona, which as well as being the road cyclist mecca, is also the scene of King's Landing in the Game of Thrones TV series. This ancient city boast an old town as twisty, windy and beautiful as any. We'll be stopping for coffee and cake in the famous La Fabrica, a local cafe run by ex tour de france riders. From Girona we'll be heading into the hills and national parks that make up a lot of Girona state and Catalonia.
Weaving through quiet country lanes, packed full of undulations and switchbacks, the riding is absolutely stunning, passing rural church peaked villages and plenty of castles. The catalonians are renowned as proud and independent people and as such many of them are experimenting in sustainable living and a cooperative economy. We'll be staying at and living in a variety of different projects, from family permaculture farms to eco villages and retreats. We'll be supplementing the time at the communities with some incredible Airbnbs and farmhouses, getting the perfect balance of time to reflect and bond off the bike.
Our adventure finishes back in Girona where we'll have the opportunity to celebrate our achievement, clink glasses of local vino and sample some catalan specialities.
