Welsh wanderings through verdant valleys, craggy hills and expansive coast-land
Wales is the best-kept secret in the UK for road cycling and seeing a new world taking shape - what better place to focus a Brake the Cycle tour!
For years dreamers and revolutionaries have decamped from the city and taken to the green pastures of Wales, inspired by its beauty and Celtic mythology. All of this presents itself every day on this tour, as you cycle on perfect roads through mountains and along the coast, while seeing some of the UKs most pioneering eco projects and sustainable communities.
Starting in Swansea we'll pootle to the famed Gower Peninsular taking in sand, sea and sunset. We'll then cycle inland to the world famous ecovillage Lammas, pioneers of 'One Planet' living and a beacon for ecological smallholdings in the UK.
Heading north along quiet country lanes, wide open vistas continue and clean air will fill our lungs as we continue our ride after a morning tour of Lammas.
Passing through Ceredigion we'll venture to Denmark Farm. Once a conventional industrial farm the 40 acres is now a buzzing wildlife conservation oasis. After a night under the stars we'll continue on to picturesque Llanidloes where we'll be welcomed to a mixed smallholding producing seasonal food and beautiful flowers.
Approaching the edge of Snowdonia National Park we'll stop over at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT). A once disused slate quarry transformed by dreamy eyed idealists looking toward a better future, the guttings of a dirty industrial past were transformed and now stands as an international hub for climate change solutions. After a morning tour following a snug night in one of their exemplary eco-builds we'll embark on the weeks biggest ride.
Our adventure turns towards the verdant valleys and craggy peaks of Snowdonia. We'll be cutting our way through the hillsides, challenging ourselves with climbs, taking in the incredible views, and stopping for tea by the imperious Harlech Castle. Emerging on the other side we'll be hugging the coast along the Llyn Peninsula to Felin Uchaf, a beautiful village binding old ways and new with the glue storytelling, inspiring visitors and volunteers that natural builds are beautiful long-lasting alternatives to conventional housing and building.
The last night will be back towards magical Snowdonia for a final evening of repose, reflection and celebration. Our final day will be riding into Bangor as champions. Lycra clad, sweaty-thighed and bellyfull of laughs we'll raise our bikes and toast to new friends, adventures had and adventures yet to come.
