Tenerife Training Camp

Why Tenerife hit the cycling headlines and what makes it so special ?
There are a few good reasons for this new popularity, but the main one is probably the Team Sky specific training. Back in 2011, Sir Bradley Wiggins was used to go to the "Island of Hell" for specific altitude training on the Mount Teide (over 2000 meters) after struggling at altitude during the 2010 Tour de France.
The volcano, with its summit over 3,700 meters above sea level, dominates the island's landscape. Tenerife host also the longest continuous climb in Europe with nearly 40 kilometers at an average gradient of 6% and about 2,100 meters in terms in total ascension ! This is fair to say that the Canarian Island is very little flat, but the climbs are usually very steady, and are perfect for your aerobic training.
The other nickname of Tenerife will resume one of the reasons to his popularity among the cyclists. This is the "Island of Eternal Spring".
I've been in a lot of different places for winter training camp, but none has the weather that Tenerife has. In the worst case during winter, it will rain 3 or 4 days per month. This is what we have in Belgium or in the UK per week ! So leave your rain jacket, your overshoes and winter gloves at home because you won't need it in Tenerife !
