Dragon Tail Bike Ride from Saigon to Hue

Itinerary: Saigon - BinhChau - MuiNe - DaLat - Lak lake - Buon Ma Thuot - KonTum - Phuoc Son - Hoi An - Hue

10 Days Moderate-Advanced

Day 1. Arrive in Saigon.
Touchdown, acclimatization and sightseeing in Saigon. Check-in to the Hotel, sample the city cuisine, assemble bikes, test your skills in the mid-city motor-scooter mayhem. It's all right-hand side of the road in Vietnam!

Day 2. Saigon to BinhChau.[B/L/D]
120km, 2 fast stages and 2 touring stages. We bust out of the city to quiet roads, starting with a trip on the Cat Lai ferry. We roll our rubber past rubber plantations, gentle hills and out to the beach at BinhChau for a break. Then it's on further to HoCoc beach. The cycling finished, it's time for the hot pools, massage and the legendary, not-to-be-missed, mud bath at BinhChau hotsprings.

Day 3. BinhChau - PhanThiet - MuiNe.[B/L/D]
110km, 2 fast stages and 2 touring stages. A flat to undulating day, with a quiet start meandering inland on country roads for 32km. Back out at the coast it's a scenic spin past fishing villages and salt fields to the KeGa light house. After lunch it's a fast blast along a smooth, new coastal road, 27km to PhanThiet city. Then it's a doddle over the hill and through Mui Ne, 12km to our overnight at The Beach resort . In the evening Gurney's optional Mountain-running Clinic --1.

Day 4. MuiNe - DiLinh - DaLat.[B/L/D]
4 stages, 2 KOM and a few cultural coffee stops! We head inland by vehicle transfer over a gravel forestry road. The mountains begin! On our bikes for 60km and 800m altitude gain to GiaBac and on to DiLinh (+1,000m). This is a beautiful narrow piece of tarmac through the tropical forest to the highland. It's possible we might get some rain here through the forest. Then, cruising through coffee plantations, it's a compulsory cultural stop to sample their wares, fuelling us over a couple more passes to Dalat for the overnight.

Day 5. DaLat - Lak.[B/L/D]
150km, 4 stages and 2 KOM. Today is the day of reckoning... 6 mountain passes! However, it's an exhilarating start with a 40km downhill! It's also a day of coffee plantations, forests, tribal villages, mountain lakes and several R and R breaks.

Day 6. Lak - BuonMaThuot - Pleiku - Kontum.[B/L/D]
140km, 2 stages. One mountain pass. Today we wind our wheels through Vietnam's history. Former battle fields during the Vietnam war: Eadran, Pleime, DucCo, etc. It's an easy day today, recovery before tomorrow! After dinner, multisporters can join Gurney for an easy Mountain-running Clinic --2.

Day 7. Kontum - Dakto - Dakglei - PhuocSon.[B/L/D]
190 km, 4 stages. Put on your tough suit today! It's the longest day of the tour, but we're well ready for it. Beating the sparrows to their song, we'll be seeing the sunrise from our saddles with a 5am start. Passing PhuongHoang airbase, we gently climb beside the Dak Po Ko River. We break the 190km into manageable segments with restful recovery stops. Finally crossing over the Truong Son Mountain range we have a wicked descent into PhuocSon.

Day 8. PhuocSon - ThanhMy - DaiLoc - VinhDien - Hoian.[B/L/D]
140km, 2 stages. Emerging from the mountains, we lose altitude cruising down to the coast, join the Bung River on its journey to the ocean and finish the day in Hoian. Back to the Coast again.

Day 9. HoiAn.[B/L]
Hoian. Rickshaw Criterium, Gurney's Mountain-running Clinic, and free day. Sleep-in or rise early for an eye-opening stroll to Hoian fish and vegetable market. After breakfast, it's the inaugural, future world-famous, Rickshaw criterium around Hoian streets. The afternoon is yours to choose, between a lie-down, a massage, Gurney's Mountain-running Clinic --3, or visiting sights, such as the famous Japanese covered bridge, TanKy Ancient House, Ceramic Trade Museum, Fukien Congregation Hall or maybe a 10km round trip to CuaDai beach for a swim.

Day 10. Hoian - DaNang - Hue.[B/L/D]
150km, 3 stages. It's back to racing today, kicking off with a 10km KOM up the beautiful Haivan pass, followed by a fun and furious 10km descent to LangCo beach. Stage 2 is an 80km touring stage over 2 passes to meet the ferry. The ferry delivers us to our final piece of tarmac, a 50km blast on quiet country roads to Hue. End of tour.

Having tamed the tarmac, box your bike and head on to Hanoi. Finally, farewell your biking buddies, take yourself and your spanking new fitness back home. You've had a warm break and you're set up nicely for a head-start on the next race season!
