Western Algarve

8 Days Moderate

The Western Algarve is an area of contrasts and a brilliant venue for a cycling holiday. Our tour, which starts in the ancient town of Silves, concentrates on the beautiful coastline west of Portimão, and then the wild and undeveloped Atlantic coast with its classic surfing beaches. The route makes extensive use of the Ecovia, the waymarked cycling route between the Spanish border and Cape St.Vincent. Between Aljezur and Monchique there are wonderful views to the Algarve coast to the south.

Silves is an attractive town reflecting its Moorish and Christian past in its two most significant buildings – a Moorish castle and Gothic cathedral. You descend to the coast following the Arade River and stay in the beach resort of Praia da Rocha. A ride along the coast takes you to fascinating and historic Lagos, a lively town with a network of narrow streets, beautiful churches, connections with Henry the Navigator and the great Portuguese explorers, and the notorious Slave Market. A two night stay here allows you to enjoy all the town’s attractions and atmosphere.

To the west of Lagos is the least developed part of the southern Algarve. You pass through the lovely coastal villages of Burgau and Salema with their whitewashed houses and fishing boats pulled up on the beach. A ride across country brings Cape St. Vincent into your sights – the ‘end of the world’ in ancient times.

After a night in Sagres you head north with the Atlantic to your left. A detour near Carrapateira will show you the wild coastline and world-famous Praia do Amado surfing beach where regular competitions are held. Continue on to Aljezur, an old town with a fascinating history.

The final leg of your journey starts with a climb towards Monchique, which can be avoided via an optional taxi transfer. Whichever way you choose to travel, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the southern Algarve from the hills near Monchique.

After a night in a beautifully located hotel with outdoor pool, you will be transferred back to Faro for your flight home.

This tour will give you a superb view of the Western Algarve and its many aspects.
