Enjoy Como / Milano

2 Days

Como is a historic small town of Roman origin, very close to the Swiss border (only a few kilometers), with a privileged position between the lake and the mountains, a crossroads of the commerce between North Italy and Europe.

It is also the native town of Alessandro Volta, the physicist famous for his scientific studies about electricity. Como can offer you a lot of attractions: sites of interests, museums, beautiful villas and fairy tale gardens, sport facilities and lively cultural activities.

Como is also the birthplace of the Italian Rationalism, an artistic and architectural movement of the time of Fascism, when this style was very popular. Example of rationalist architecture are: the Novocomum, the Giuliani Frigerio House, the War Memorial and the ex-Casa del Fascio, all designed by the famous Architect Giuseppe Terragni (1904-1943).
Besides the modern architecture, Como is rich in authentic jewels of the past: the Duomo, built between 14° and 18° century and considered one of the most beautiful monuments in North Italy, or the Broletto, seat of the Municipality in the 15° century. Very interesting are also: Porta Torre (one of the gateway to the medieval town), the old churches of San Fedele, with its enchanting, timeless square, and Sant’Abbondio with its two belltowers, the Torre del Baradello, erected by Federico Barbarossa and the Tempio Voltiano, dedicated to the memory of the inventor of Volta’s pile. Villa Olmo, too, is worth a visit.

This impressive neo-classical villa erected by Architect Simone Cantoni has superb gardens overlooking the lake and it is now a prestigious location for important art-exhibitions, events and conferences.
Those who love adventure and excursions, instead, can admire Como and its lake from different perspectives: they can take the famous Funicular which connects the town directly to Monte di Brunate, or can fly on a seaplane of the Aereo Club Como or can go on a boating trip simply taking one of the numerous boats sailing from the town center.

Como is also very close to Milano, the world fashion capital city (trains Como-Milano run very frequently), to Campione d’Italia and its Casinò (an Italian enclave in Switzerland), to Monza and Bergamo.
