France

Our new 7 night holiday in the delightfully unspoiled south-west of France takes you back in time following the UNSECO World Heritage Canal du Midi. Pedalling along quiet towpaths with a backdrop of sunflowers and neat rows of vines, you'll pass barges chugging slowly along as you journey towards the azure blue of the Mediterranean Sea.The 240km/150mi canal constructed in the 17th Century links the Mediterranean via the Garonne River with the atlantic. Your journey starts in Castelnaudary, home to Cassoulet, following tracks and tree lined paths. You pass mediaeval villages as you make your way to Carcassonne, with the castle, 'la Cite' a UNSECO World Heritage Site. From there head through the vineyards of the excellent Minervois wines, passing Gothic and Romanesque villages to stay in pretty canal side Homps. The vineyards continue as we head to Beziers, the birthplace of Riquet who engineered and built the canal, passing along the way canal side villages and some of the canals engineering marvels. From here we reach the end of the canal, passing nature reserves of wild horses and bird sanctuaries before a wonderful traffic free cycle path along the shimmering Mediterranean Coast, to the port town of Sete, known as the Venice of the Languedoc...
