We welcome you in Amsterdam, with dinner on board the Gandalf, who will take us on this adventure. It starts with a guided tour of the city at night between old and contemporary architecture. Stories of yesterday and today’s hustle and bustle that breaths freedom and tolerance at every step, among thousands of bicycles.

During breakfast we navigate to Breukelen. The boat continues to Utrecht while we cycle along the River Vecht entering the territory once occupied by the Roman army, at the extreme northern border of the empire, now a residential area. On the outskirts of Utrecht we visit the Castle Slot Zuylen, ancient medieval castle and the Castle De Haar, the largest in the Netherlands. Elegant and refined, Utrecht is a lively place. The heart of the city is located in the Tower or Dom, the highest in the whole country, separated from the Duomo in 1647 due to a tornado. We reach the Gandalf to sail to Vianen, a beautiful medieval town full of secluded corners to discover.

We immerse ourselves in the green plains to reach a magical place. Kinderdijk, with its 19 mills that will bring us to a foregone era, to the Netherlands of dutch millers who had to work hard despite bad weather, rain, and strong winds, because their task was to monitor the water level and to prevent the sea from coming in. Hard work that continues today, but with modern techniques, allowing the country to exist with 40% of the territory below sea level.

We continue by bike to reach Dordrecht, regarded as the oldest city in Holland and sail to Willemstad, a star-shaped fortified city with a long history. We take the bike to venture in the Dutch countryside. In Tholen the barge is waiting ready to take us to Antwerp. The city of diamonds is a succession of works of art, majestic palaces and churches in the Italian Renaissance style, evidence of wealth and tolerance. The city of Rubens, is home to innumerable works of the master of mannerism and interesting museums, ancient and modern. The monumental Central Station, called the ‘Railway Cathedral’, is a prestigious work of engineering. Built in 1895 to replace the previous wooden railway station, it has three levels of tracks covered by a spectacular vault in iron and glass 44 meters high, a large hall clad in stone and colored marble, completed by an imposing dome.

Antwerp deserves some time to discover and enjoy it’s hidden retreats, visit the wonderful museums or simply do some shopping. We spend the morning free and take the bike before lunch to ride in the beautiful Flemish landscape along the River Scheldt between the XV century castle of Bazel and the city of Dendermonde.

We are in the land of the river Scheldt. We will pass by the gentle giant studying the tides that here is quiet evident. Ghent waits for us with its lively city center and the strength of its impressive architecture both sacred and profane that dominate the vast central esplanade. The Castle of the Counts of Flanders is a beautiful example of medieval fortress and still preserving the magic of the past.

A long canal connects Ghent to Bruges. We follow him in part diverting along the way to get into the fairy tale atmosphere of Castles and gardens. In the early afternoon we arrive in Bruges. It is a city that is evident at first glance but continuously displays itself in different ways with new looks. Secluded corners and glimpses, channels as mirrors, embroidery and lace reflected on the sculpted stone. Bruges, rich in works of art, including a splendid Michelangelo in the Church of Nôtre Dame. The Gandalf will be waiting by the Minnewater, a XVI century park, to offer us a warm welcome, as always.
