Mekong Bike and Kayak

3 Days Easy

Depart from Pakse towards the Four Thousand Islands, locally known as Si Pan Done. We begin our kayaking adventure at Hat Saykhoon village and over the course of the next two days paddle with the flowing waters of the Mekong, sometimes peaceful and at other times more challenging, but at all times scenically spectacular and culturally interesting. We make our way to shore to visit peaceful villages and islands lined with coconut trees, where we take time to enjoy picnic lunches. On the island of Don Khone we take a bicycle ride and a short walk to see colonial buildings as well as the spectacular Lippi Waterfalls, to hear the spine chilling thunder from a fall that amazed the early French explorers. On the island of Ban Hang Khone, we take a boat ride to spot the rare Irrawaddy dolphins (in the dry season we may be able to paddle directly to this place), the only site left in Laos for this highly endangered species. From Don Ae we kayak downstream passing surrounding forests that shelter a surprising variety of wildlife. We come ashore and continue by tuk-tuk to Khone Phapheng waterfalls, the largest falls in Laos, followed by our return road trip to Pakse.
