10 Days

Sitting above the village of Bellagio our accommodation provides us sweeping views of Lake Como. We see the small towns and hamlets that dot the lake and sit high in the surrounding hills that sparkle in the twilight whilst in the distance sit the majestic Alps of Switzerland. It is a memorable start to a day in Italy.

Whether it is riding the road that borders Lake Como or the tracks that head skywards, cycling in this region is sublime. These roads are often narrow but it is on these roads that history is written. Our accommodation sits on the route of the 5th of the monuments, the Tour of Lombardy or as the locals know it, Il Lombardia. History is right outside our door.

A 10 kilometre climb that starts adjacent our hotel takes us to the Madonna del Ghisallo, a chapel high atop a hill that has featured often in the Giro d’Italia and is ascended yearly during Il Lombardia. The Muro di Sormano a torture test that features sections of 27% gradient follows after a stunning ride through dense forest.

We have options to cross into Switzerland and loop around Lake Lugano, home of Alberto Contador and Vincenzo Nibali or tackle many of the local climbs.

After a short drive across Northern Italy we arrive in Bormio, an Italian alpine town that is central to climbs such as the Stelvio, the Gavia and the Passo Mortirolo. The Mortirolo is a challenging climb where you pass a memorial to Marco Pantani, a good spot to stop for a photo – or a short rest. We will tackle both the Stelvio and Gavia from the two roads that take you to the summit. Memories of these days will last a lifetime.
