Orient Express

Explore Europe by bike and join OE alumni of the past who have cycled from Paris to Istanbul on what is becoming the classic bike adventure thru Europe. From the ‘City of Lights’ we set off through French vineyards, and cycle nearly traffic-free along the Danube cycleway.

43 Days Easy-Moderate

Explore the continent on what is becoming the classic bike adventure through Europe. Enjoy lesser-known jewels like Troyes, Regensberg, & Alba Iubia. Experience the spas of Budapest, the spices of East European bazaars & medieval cathedral towns. Stop to sample local wines and pastries. See the landscape, culture, and cuisine change with each pedal stroke as you spin eastwards towards the Black Sea.

Your adventure begins in Paris, the City of Lights. After doffing our helmets at Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe we pass through Provins, a walled medieval town designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the rolling ‘Champagne’ region and into Alsace, along a route dotted by spa towns. Soon the tour pulls into the old university town of Freiburg, gateway to the Black Forest. Next up is Donaueschingen where we join the Danube Cycleway, a 1,357 km dedicated bicycle path. At times completely isolated from vehicular traffic, we will bike across picturesque Bavaria through Ulm, the birthplace of Albert Einstein, Linz and thence into Vienna, with its monumental palaces dating to the Hapsburg Empire.

Budapest, our next destination, once dubbed the ‘Pearl of the Danube’, is followed quickly by a climb up into the Carpathians and the Romanian region of Transylvania. Riders will not soon forget the Transfagaras Range. From the summit riders will zoom downhill through tunnels and past manmade lakes and on into Bucharest, once dubbed ‘Paris of the East’. Heading south, the riders cross into Bulgaria before turning east to the Black Sea. A few days later we arrive at our final destination, Varna.
