Two of Australias longest rail trails are rapidly developing forming the trunk of a spectacular back-country cycle route from Ipswich to Kilkivan, within reach of the Sunshine Coast or Hervey Bay. The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (or BVRT) is nearing completion, altogether 150 kms from Brisbanes satellite city of Ipswich, up the scenic Brisbane Valley all the way to the old railhead at Yarraman, high on the Great Dividing Range. Last section under construction is Toogoolawah to Moore but there are alternative quiet country roads for most of this 25km. The BVRT is unsealed and most fun on a MTB.The Great Queensland Rail Trail is developing along the old railway corridor running inland from Maryborough to Kingaroy. The first 45 kms of sealed trail officially opens in April 2017 between Kingaroy and Murgon. A similar distance is under construction from Murgon to Kilkivan and should open in stages during 2017.On to Noosa: Leaving the rail trail project at Kilkivan, we choose a 2 day route of 130km on back roads to Noosa, overnighting in Gympie.
