Description

Beginning in Amsterdam, this Grand Tour of Holland takes you through traditional Dutch fishing villages and preserved medieval towns, past windmills and on a journey across Afsluitdijk, a 34km long causeway splitting the Waddenzee from IJsselmeer. Shortly after leaving the romantic canals and bridges of Amsterdam you pass through the pretty villages of Edam, Volendam and Monnickdam and along the shores of Lake Markermeera. Then cycle along an old sea dyke providing excellent views over Ijsselmeer.Arrival at the 34km long causeway of Afsluitdijk gives the opportunity to ride along a dedicated cycle path and appreciate the work which went into creating the largest lake in Western Europe and splitting it from the Waddenzeehe. The Wouda Steam Pumping Station is your next highlight. Built in 1920 this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the largest operational steam pumping station in operation and it is worth taking the time to take one of the regular tours leaving from the visitor centre. Cycling alongside the Randmeren Lakes watching the sail boats go by, you will arrive at Kampen which boasts a fantastic town gate called Koornmarktpoort dating back from the 14th century. Then come upon the Kampen Sea Dikes and the bustling marina of Zwartsluis further down the path. See the most visited castle in Holland, Muiden castle, which since 1280 has been sitting on a small moat to collect tolls from passing ships. A little further down the path awaits the well-preserved medieval town of Naarden, built as a star shape fort to enable better use of its cannons!
