Cycle the Châteaux of the Loire

"Discover the châteaux and palaces of the Loire Valley on this easy going cycling trip. Once a region of royal pomp and grandeur, the Loire Valley boasts an extraordinary spectacle of ornate châteaux, gardens and royal homes of nobility dating back to the 14th century. Everyone loves a castle – and in the Loire Valley there are dozens of spectacular fortresses to visit. The countryside makes for easy cycling so we’ve combined two-wheels with a seven-day journey that visits a host of the valley’s impressive castles.

The River Loire is never far away as you cycle between fabulous fortresses and spectacular castles, popping into charming villages and towns en route. Starting in Blois, on the banks of the lower river Loire, your first castle of the trip is revealed. Chateau de Blois has been lived in by several French kings and is closely associated with Joan of Arc.

With days of cycling of around 45km (with options for shorter or longer outings on some days), this is a fairly leisurely cycling holiday that allows ample time for visiting the main attractions in the Pays des Châteaux (Land of the Castles).

How about Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire, which has been through various incarnations since the 10th century, before being rebuilt in the 15th century? Or the royal château in Ambroise, a town that is also famed as the place of Leonardo da Vinci? You’ll also visit one of the Loire’s smallest castles of Troussay, as well as the fairytale-esque Chateau to Fougères sur Bièvre and the instantly recognisable Château of Chambord.

Many of the castles also boast impressive gardens. Of note is Chenonceau Castle, which was built to straddle the Cher River. The castle tells a famous tale of French rivalry between Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medicis. Two gardens are named after the lady adversaries.
