Provence: Wine Roads to Chateauneuf du Pape

8 Days Easy-Moderate 188 Km

Provence is famed for its beautiful landscape of rolling hills and a dramatic mountainous backdrop. It’s also much loved for producing fabulous wines. Combine your two favourite hobbies of cycling and wine-tasting on this self-guided eight-day cycling tour.

Your cycling adventure begins in the picturesque fortified Papal city of Avignon, and heads via L’Isle sur la Sorgue, with its amazing collection of antique stores, towards the sleepy village of Venasque. Acclaimed as one of France’s most beautiful villages, Venasque is also at the heart of the fabulous wine-producing region of southern Rhone. Further exploration of this peaceful area reveals a viticultural paradise. From Venasque, your cycling tour meanders through the Vaucluse area, with its sweeping lavender fields, countless vineyards and perched hilltop villages. The rewards of some ups and downs on your bike include wonderful wine villages such as Malemort-du-Comtat, Mormoiron and Mazan.

Two nights spent in Bedoin allow you to immerse yourself in Côtes du Ventoux country, riding between charming and traditional villages nestled prettily beneath the mighty Mont Ventoux. Grapes grown here are at higher altitude and produce wines that are lighter and fruitier.
Your final destination is Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is acclaimed worldwide for outstanding red wines. Visiting this Provencal village – and its surrounding environs – offers a viticultural paradise on two-wheels.

With only 10km to 45km to cycle each day, speed is not of the essence but the culture, food and wines of this region are. Visit vineyards, wineries, wine cellars and restaurants for a true taste of the famous wine region’s reds, whites and roses.
