Thanks to the Mediterranean climate and the soil, the footsteps of the mountains surrounding the plane are a perfect terrain to produce the grape. The ancient farmers in the area decided to use the plains for planting olive trees and the slopes for planting vines on terraces separated by dry-stone walls.

Since 2005 influential wine guru Robert Parker put Empordà on the world wine-producing map. Thanks of the hard work of the wineries this area has been certified as a Origin Designation of Empordà.

It’s an easy tour for regular cyclist, that combines half of the tour on quite secondari roads, and half on nice and clean non paved roads. Stages are 40km average without big climbs.

You will have the opportunity to discover on of the most wild areas in Girona, cycling by the filds and farmhouse in the east of Girona, in Llemana Valley. Visit the plain of Llagostera and surrounding fields. Discover the Gavarres mountains visiting the Saint Miquel Castle and finish the tour with an endurance stage in Rocacorba valley and Banyoles lake.

The second section of the greenway drives you to the coast, reaching the Mediterranean Sea. The ride is easy and fun and you’ll be passing through cropland and forests. On clear days you can enjoy an extraordinary views of the Pyrenees.

The last part of the route crosses the Ridaura valley and runs gently down to the seaside town of Sant Feliu de Guíxols, where you can relax and enjoy the rest of the day at the beach.

The great tour of the Empordà starts in the magnificent city of Girona and offers a complete itinerary across the Empordà, one of the most beautiful landscapes of Catalonia.

Within just a few kilometres, riders will see a great variety of landscapes , such as medieval villages, little coves or traditional fishing villages. It’s a challenging route for medium level cyclists, due to its gradients that include safe mountain passes between 5 and 10km. This route also takes you to Cap de Creus, the most eastern point of the Iberian Peninsula.
