South Coast 500 Circuit

9 Days Moderate-Advanced

The South Coast 500 is an extension to the South Coast 200 route. It is a circular tour around Dumfries and Galloway region starting from Gretna Green on the border with England and heads west through small towns and villages in the Galloway countryside with the return leg of the circuit following the coastline from the Mull of Galloway, Scotland's most southerly point in the west back to Gretna Green in the east. The tour, using cycle routes and quiet country roads already used in our shorter tours, is a challenge and can be done in 9 days cycling around 45 to 55 miles a day or up to 2 weeks.
Features include visiting Wanlockhead, the highest village in Scotland and also Keir Mill, neat Thornhill, where the first pedal cycle was invented in 1840. After Glenkens region in the Stewartry, you continue through scenic Glentrool in the Galloway Forest Park and into Wigtownshire visiting Corsewall and Mull of Galloway lighthouses at the end of the Rhins peninsulas. Portpatrick on the west coast can be a rest day if you wish, before your return journey east along our 'South Coast 200' route from the Mull of Galloway following a coastal route as far as possible back to Gretna Green.
