Freewheel Holidays was established in 1999 as an independent tour operator specialising in cycling holidays in continental Europe. The business was run by Barbara Cray and John Lightwood until 2007. The business then transferred to the ownership of Sunliving Travel Ltd with directors Tony Moy and Paul Cresswell until October 2015.

Freewheel Holidays is now owned by Sports Tours International Ltd, in Manchester, U.K and is a sister brand of Wheel2Wheel Holidays and Whereabouts Holidays.
