Vienna Castle Road & Wine Cycling Holidays

Castles and manors of the emperor family in the Wine and Danube region

8 Days Easy-Moderate 350 KmAVG 58 Km

During the summer, the emperor and noble families left Vienna for its heat and spent their days in smaller and larger castles and manors in the Danube valley, March plain and in the wine district. The castles in the March plain and Danube meadows where used for hunting and for short breaks with their Liaisons.

1. Day: Arrival to Vienna

2. Day: Guided cycle tour in Vienna, 3 hours, 15 km
Vienna was once the centre of the largest empire in the world. The power and glory of the Habsburg rule is mirrored in the boulevards and architecture of Vienna. Our bike tour covers what it took the Habsburgs more than 600 years to build. It would take three days to walk what we show you in three hours. If something quickens your interest, then you know where to return later for a visit. A must for those wanting to get the “feel” of this incredibly beautiful city!

3. Day: Vienna – Hainburg/Bad Deutsch Altenburg, 60 - 74 km
The Marchfeldkanal cycle route takes you from Langenzersdorf along the charming Marchfeld canal and the Rußbach stream to Hainburg. Many info boards and adventure points wait for you in the five themed sections: Marchfeld canal, Napoleon, Asparagus & Co, Nature & Art and Marchfeld castles. The canal became almost natural in the last years and the cycle trails follow a towpath to the sun-soaked region Römerland Carnuntum – Marchfeld: with an annual sunshine of more than 2,000 hours the area is among the sunniest in Europe.

On the south bank, the conditions are perfect for wine growing and for vegetable growing in the Marchfeld region. They are fabulous and very different worlds that are waiting for you here between Vienna and the Slovakian capital Bratislava.

4. Day: Castles, National park, Romain and the Danube river, 50 km, +- 230 Hm
A visit to Carnuntum brings the ancient Roman period back to life. The region boasts architectural masterpieces, romantic ruins and precious treasures. Carnuntum, the imperial city, comes to life again. Its Roman City Quarter is unique worldwide owed to the reconstruction of major types of ancient Roman urban architecture: a townhouse, a lavish city mansion and public baths. A fourth building protects Carnuntum's so far only preserved floor mosaic. With this approach, the museum lets you travel back in time to the first five decades of the 4th century AD.

Afterwards you will follow the Danube to a ferry station where you cross over to see the Orth castle where you find the centre for Danube-Meadows national park. Afterwards you will see the magnificent Eckartsau castle, which is in the national park and used to be a hunting castle. On your way back to the hotel, you may do an excursion to the medieval town of Hainburg. Foodies will love the world of culinary delicacies: fresh crunchy vegetables and excellent asparagus from the Marchfeld region, fish from the Danube – please take a seat.

5. Day: Hainburg/Bad Deutsch Altenburg – Marchegg - Dürnkrut, 60 km, +- 330 Hm
Transfer Poysdorf
Today you will cross the Danube again and follow the cycle path to the famous Hof castle with its gardens. Afterwards you have 2 options:
a.) You follow the cycle trail to Slovakia along the Iron curtain trail almost always along the river March and it’s meadows
b.) You will follow the cycle trail in-between the March meadows and vegetable fields to the Marchegg castle with its white stork colony. Passing some little villages you will come to smaller vineyards with cellar-lined roads.
In Dürnkrut next to the old castle, the taxi will transfer you to Poysdorf, which is in the centre of the wine district.

6. Day: Poysdorf – Reintal - Lednice-Valtice – Poysdorf, 75 km, +-720 HM
Today you will visit the castle of the noble family of „Lichtenstein“ which used to be one of the most powerful noble families in Austria. Well they still have their own state “Lichtenstein – next to Switzerland” and they built wonderful castles around their homeland in “Moravia and Weinviertel”. The route lead through picturesque vineyards and romantic cellar-lined roads to fortresses, castles and a considerable number of well-run museums. And of course also to wine: The Weinviertel is crisscrossed by cycling routes named after grape varieties.
An easy ride through Lednice-Valtice area offers a unique landscape experience, which, thanks to its outstanding value, is listed in the UNESCO world heritage site. Romantic structures as well as parks and gardens appear unexpectedly in the middle of the forest.

7. Day: Poysdorf – (Transfer Mistelbach) – Zayatal – Kreuztal – Donaugraben – Wien
65 – 85 km, +- 500 – 850 Hm
Leaving the romantic Weinviertel you will follow smaller river valleys but there will be some ascent up to a vineyard with wide views over the countryside.
